Hacking/Security Computer security has been one of the things that had always interested me when I first got online. Well, I can't say when I first got online really. When I first got online I didn't know any better, it took me one thing to make me realize I need to learn the inside and out of how everything works. I'm sure you can guess what that thing is. I had a server running and although by that time I believe I didn't have many files there, my friends decided to have me open an app disguised as a text file. Didn't know any better, looked at the icon..it was a text icon so i opened it. Tadaa! now my HD was aliased onto my server, when i realized this (5 seconds later) I kicked them off, deleted the accounts it created, deleted the aliases, locked everything down and sat there wondering what the hell just happened in 2 seconds. lol. Since that day I learned my lesson and I tried to learn from others which was always a failed attempt. By the time I got into the whole scene, lots of people were getting out of it due to paranoia. The lack of guidance actually made me work harder into learning on my own. Now 5 years later, I'm still learning everyday. I like to work on my own, practice on my own computer and everything I do is something I do by myself. Most everyone I know has had someone that took them under their wings and taught them the ins and outs of everything. I think they are very lucky that they had that guidance, but I feel that learning on my own also makes me much more proud of all that I have learned. I have so much more I would like to learn, but with everything I do now its becoming harder and harder to just sit here and do what I want. Theres actually a site of mine that I have had on hold for 3 years now. I hope to finally launch it by the time Defcon XI rolls by , but I'm not sure. I'm trying my very best at the moment. Its gonna become a full time job to maintain that site and it'll be a hobby site so its just something I need to find the right staff for as well. :) Lots of people don't seem to realize the true meaning of a hacker. Lots of the people that even visit this site now aren't aware of what the true hacker mentality is. I get angry letters saying I am the kind of person that ruins peoples lives by destroying others computers, accounts, etc. To me a hacker is someone that wants to learn more about the ins and outs of software, hardware, telephones, etc. Knowing that information of course to some is too much to handle. But to keep that information you find and to use it for the good is something we should have pride in. How do you use it for good? Well, that depends from person to person. If you're just into it as a hobby most likely you apply what you learn to your personal computers, software and what have you. If you're a system administrator or that is what you are looking into for the future you will probably make sure those vulnerabilities are not there when you are securing your servers for your company, work, etc. If you're a programmar, you apply it to your application when writing the code. Theres very many different aspects of a hacker to even define it all and to explain it to you, but its all around you. I know maybe to some that may have flew past your head so let me simplify with an everyday type of example. Lets use a house for example instead of a computer. You have your house and you have your standard locks on your doors. You go out of town for a weekend and find that your house was broken into. The police say you should put deadbolt locks on your door so you go and do this. Now, you think you are safe and then you go out of town for a week and your windows were smashed in and the burgulars didn't use the door at all but to leave. Now you and your family think about getting a security system installed in your home. These are the steps you generally take to make your home a safe place to live and so people do not take your valuables, correct? Well, the same goes for computers. Sometimes its a trial and error like the above example or you have someone there that has had something like that happen and they let you know what you should do to make your home safe. I hope that made a little more sense. :) I'm not great with examples so bear with me. lol. Anyway, thats about all I have to talk about in this section, but its one of my very many hobbies. :) |
